From my Perspective — One Race.

As we power through 2021 at warp speed, we find ourselves still in a pandemic, sifting through the rubble and ashes of the uprisings that started last summer. Social distancing remains a part of the recommended solution, which only further heightens our spiritual discourse and disconnect. Previous to this pandemic, technologies like the media, smartphones, social media, and the internet fostered our indulgences and kept the majority of people ‘out of balance’ yet in a state of uninformed bliss.

It is only in times of discomfort that a snake sheds its skin. And that process is painful, requires patience and the hard work of friction. It is the process of discomfort that brings about the new skin. I see a similar discomfort in our humanity as doubt sweeps across the planet. The world isn’t blowing up; I believe we are in an evolutionary cycle that brings about change. We are evolving, not going to hell in a handbasket. We are going through a spiritual reckoning, where a reconciliation with our past is required. And to understand and accept the good, the bad, the ugly, and the beautiful of life’s experiences.

News flash: life is not fair. It can be down right harsh and cruel, while in the same breath beautifully inspiring. In every crisis there is opportunity, and the times are asking each of us if we are ready to fulfill our potential and truly be a civilized and intelligent people. At the turn of the 20th century, sociologist, educator, author, and civil rights champion W.E.B. DuBois held great concerns that race was being used as a biological explanation for what he understood to be social and cultural differences between peoples. It is time we examine this fight and how we go about championing this cause.

W.E.B. DuBois believed the black-versus-white argument of race ignores the rich diversity of our humanity. And I wholeheartedly agree. We use terms like ‘people of colour’ that do not include white. To me, that is segregation. We are taught to be conscious of our unconscious biases, of our stereotypes and not to make broad-stroke statements or assumptions about any ethnicity or nationality, and yet we speak of white privilege.

The first race-based classification leading to the construct of race was a lie back in 1776, and is still a lie today. If we truly want to end racism, then it is time we stop acknowledging race to categorize human beings. From my perspective, we all walk the same earth, breathe the same air, drink the same water; we all come from woman; and death will visit us all. It is not about being colour blind, it is about being human-sighted and accepting people as they are, as part of one human race. So if you truly believe that pigmentation is what makes us different races, then maybe you are part of the problem.
